Introduction

The College of Bioengineering, Tianjin University of Science and Technology is located in Binhai New Area, Tianjin. Adjacent to BinhaiZhongguancun Science Park and Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biotechnology and Medicine, it sits at the core area of the BeijingTianjinHebei region and enjoys a prime geographical location. With more than 60years of dedicated development, the college has built solid disciplinary foundations and earned an outstanding academic reputation in light industry and biomedicine. It has established a complete talenttraining system covering undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs, together with a postdoctoral research station. Currently, the college has over 1,100 undergraduates and more than 1,600 masters and doctoral students. It serves as a key base for talent cultivation and scientifictechnological innovation in Chinas lightindustry, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.

I. Historical Evolution: Carrying Forward the Legacy and Striving Forward

Dating back to 1958, the college originated from the Fermentation Engineering Program of Hebei Institute of Light Industry. As a core program of one of China’s first four undergraduate institutions directly under the Ministry of Light Industry, it laid the foundation for talent cultivation and technological research and development in China’s lightindustry fermentation sector.During the national highereducation institutional restructuring in 1964, the Fermentation Engineering Program of Beijing Institute of Light Industry was fully transferred here, making it one of the two most competitive fermentation engineering programs among Chinese universities at that time.The program was renamed Biochemical Engineering in 1993. In 1998, in response to the adjustment of undergraduate program catalog issued by the Ministry of Education of China, it was officially renamed Bioengineering. The Pharmaceutical Engineering Program was launched in 2000. In 2004, the College of Bioengineering was formally established on the basis of Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering Programs, marking a new chapter for multidisciplinary coordinated development.

Committed to developing into a highlevel researchoriented college with distinct characteristics, it provides solid talent support and technical assurance for the highquality development of national bioindustries and the transformation and upgrading of regional economies.

The college is a member institution of the Teaching Advisory Board for Bioengineering and Biotechnology Majors under the Ministry of Education, ViceChairman Unit of China BioFermentation Industry Association, and ViceChairman Unit of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology.

III. Disciplines and Programs: A WellEstablished System with Distinct Strengths

The college features distinctive disciplinary development. It has built a complete talenttraining system covering undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs, and its disciplinary strength ranks among the top of peer institutions nationwide. It offers doctoral and masters programs as well as a postdoctoral research station for the firstlevel discipline of Light Industry Technology and Engineering; firstlevel masters programs in Bioengineering and Pharmacy; and professional doctoral and masters programs in Biology and Medicine. Among them, Fermentation Engineering is a national key discipline. Light Industry Technology and Engineering receives key superiorlevel support and has been accredited as a Tianjin TopTier Discipline and Tianjin FirstClass Discipline. Pharmacy is a Tianjin Key Discipline.The college strongly supports six university disciplines to enter the global top1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), namely Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Biology & Biochemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, and Environment/Ecology. Agricultural Sciences ranks among the global top1, and Polymer Science is ranked 9th worldwide in the U.S.News global rankings.

Remarkable achievements have been made in program development. The Bioengineering Program is a National FirstClass Undergraduate Program, National Characteristic Program, and selected program under the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education. It has obtained national engineering education accreditation, and is recognized as a Tianjin BrandName Program, IndustryEducation Integration BrandName Program, and key NewEngineering development program. The Pharmaceutical Engineering Program is a National FirstClass Undergraduate Program, a program for Tianjins strategic emerging industries, an applicationoriented program, and an IndustryEducation Integration BrandName Program. Both core programs demonstrate prominent industrial orientation and educational characteristics.The Synthetic Biology Program is a new undergraduate admission program launched in 2026. As an emerging interdisciplinary program integrating multidisciplinary theories and methodologies, it responds to major national strategies and futureindustry development requirements with a focus on cuttingedge research. By pooling highquality disciplinary resources, the program strives to advance disruptive applications of syntheticbiology technologies across diverse industries.

As the lead university, the college has developed the Tianjin TEDA Biomedicine IndustryEducation Consortium, one of Chinas firstbatch nationallevel industryeducation consortia. It takes the lead in establishing the BeijingTianjinHebei Biomedicine Modern Industrial College Alliance and supports the founding of Tianjin’s first Institute of Excellent Engineers. Joint postgraduate training is delivered with leading research institutes and enterprises including Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and CanSino Biologics. A SinoBritish DualMasters Program has been jointly established with the University of Bradford, United Kingdom, forming a fullspectrum collaborative talentcultivation system.

IV. Faculty: Distinguished Scholars with WellStructured Talent Echelon

The college has 160 faculty and staff members, among whom 119 are fulltime teachers, 86 hold senior professional titles, and 100% of fulltime teachers possess doctoral degrees. A highquality faculty echelon with a reasonable age structure covering senior, middleaged and young generations has been formed with outstanding academic competence.

The faculty includes a large number of leading industrylevel talents: 2 members of the Academic Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council, 3 recipients of the National TenThousand Talents Program, 1 recipient of the National HundredThousandTenThousand Talent Project, 1 National Young and MiddleAged Expert with Outstanding Contributions, 1 recipient of the National Excellent Youth Fund, 1 National TopNotch Young Talent, 1 Shennong Young Elite, and 3 experts entitled to Special Government Allowances from the State Council.In addition, the college hosts 1 Innovative Team under the Cheung Kong Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, 2 Tianjin “131” Innovative Talent Teams and 1 Tianjin KeyField Innovative Team. The Applied Microbiology Faculty Party Branch was selected for the national Double Leaders Faculty PartyBranch Secretaries PowerforCountry Special Initiative. The Pharmaceutical Engineering Faculty Party Branch was honored as one of Tianjins first batch of Model Party Branches. The Drug Design and Synthesis Team won the title of National March8th RedBanner Collective. The college was awarded the honor of Advanced Collective of Tianjin Education System.

For research platforms, nationallevel facilities include the State Key Laboratory of Biobased Fiber Materials, State Key Laboratory of Food Nutrition and Safety (ProvinceMinistry Cosponsored), NationalLocal Joint Engineering Laboratory for MetabolicControl Fermentation Technology, National Engineering Research Center of Industrial Enzymes, and National Center of Synthetic Biological Innovation. Provincialministerial, industrial and internationalcooperation platforms cover the National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Food NutritionSafety and Medicinal Chemistry, Key Laboratory of Industrial Fermentation Microbiology (Ministry of Education), Food Biotechnology Engineering Research Center (Ministry of Education), Industrial Innovation Technology Research Institute of China Alcoholic Drinks Association, Key Laboratory of Microbial Engineering of China Light Industry, Tianjin Engineering Technology Center for Microbial Fermentation and Metabolic Control, Haihe Laboratory of Synthetic Biology, Tianjin Fermentation Industry Engineering Technology Center, and ChinaThailand Joint Research Institute for Modern Biotechnology and Medicine. These facilities deliver advanced hardware support for original innovation and technological R&D.

For teaching platforms, the college runs the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Bioengineering, National Joint Training Demonstration Base for Professional Postgraduates in Biopharmaceutical Technology, Tianjin Municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Bioengineering in Institutions of Higher Education, and NewEngineering Practice Teaching Base, together with multiple secondary and tertiary laboratories with complete and stateoftheart experimental facilities. The college took the lead in building China’s first lightindustrythemed curriculum ideologicalpolitical teaching resource platform and was awarded an excellent case for the ThreeDimensional Education initiative in Tianjin highereducation institutions.

VI. Scientific Research Achievements: InnovationDriven for Industrial Empowerment

Leveraging its traditional strengths in lightindustry fermentation and AIempowered biotechnology, the college focuses on four research directions: precise drug synthesis, lowcarbon biochemical engineering, intelligent futurefood manufacturing, and smart biomaterials. Nineteen research teams have been set up to reconstruct the whole biomanufacturing chain and create brandnew application scenarios in pharmaceuticals, chemical engineering, food and materials sectors. A fullchain transformation platform spanning basic research to industrial application has been constructed. Adopting the innovative “Laboratory + Incubator + Enterprise” model, the college consolidates original innovation, scalesup processes and promotes achievement transformation, accelerating the translation of scientific ideas into realworld applications.

In recent years, the college has undertaken and completed over 700 national, provincialministerial and horizontal research projects. Among them, faculty preside over 2 National Key R&D Program projects and 16 National Key R&D Program subprojects; undertake 2 major horizontal projects with funding of 20million RMB each, 14 major horizontal projects above 10million RMB, and more than 170 horizontal projects exceeding 1million RMB. Through technology transfer and other services, the college has helped enterprises generate hundreds of billions RMB in additional output value. More than 10 biotech startups have been incubated, with equity financing exceeding 1billion RMB in place.

The college has won 2 National Science and Technology Awards, 6 China Patent Excellence Awards, over 40 provincialministerial science and technology prizes and 46 socialsector science and technology awards. More than 1500 academic papers have been published, including over 750 SCI papers. Over 400 national invention patents have been granted. Faculty have participated in formulating and revising more than 20 national and industrial standards. Multiple research outputs have reached internationally leading or advanced levels.

VII. Education and Teaching: Fostering Virtue through Education with Fruitful Outcomes

Upholding the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education and staying committed to cultivating talent for the CPC and the nation, the college closely follows the philosophy of “integrated development of vocational and general education, industryeducation integration, and scienceeducation integration, and advances a linked training model for undergraduate, masters and doctoral students中国日报网.In recent years, the college has completed 5 nationallevel and 8 Tianjinmunicipallevel projects for undergraduate teaching quality initiatives and teaching reform. Two projects, including *Exploration and Practice of Innovative Talent Training Mode for Bioengineering and Biotechnology Majors*, have won National Teaching Achievement Awards. Six projects have received Tianjin Municipal Teaching Achievement Awards, among which are Undergraduate Talent Training System for Bioindustry Driven by IndustryUniversityResearch Integration under International Engineering Education* and Innovation and Practice of the FiveinOne Postgraduate Training Model for Biology and Medicine with Duallinkage and TripleIntegration*.

The college offers 3 National FirstClass Courses, 1 course under the Ministry of Educations TopTier Course Initiative, and 6 Tianjinmunicipallevel firstclass and featured courses. More than 40 textbooks have been published, among which *Microbiology (2nd Edition)* is selected as a nationallevel planning textbook for undergraduate higher education under the 14th FiveYear Plan.Great importance is attached to fostering students’ innovative capacity. Over ten brandname student activities have been developed, such as the MicroWorld Art Competition, the Qiushi Forum, and microbiology popularscience practice. Students have achieved outstanding results in major competitions including the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM), the College Undergraduate Life Science Competition (CULSC), and the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition. They have been awarded iGEM Gold Medals, national first prizes, silver and bronze medals. Several projects have been honored as “Best Entrepreneurial Project” and “My Favorite Project” at the National Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Annual Conference.

Taking the lead in building China’s first lightindustrythemed curriculum ideologicalpolitical teaching resource platform, the Biomedicine Modern Industrial College was selected as one of the National Best Cases for Modern Industrial College Development in 2022 and was officially approved as a Tianjinmunicipallevel Modern Industrial College in 2023, realizing seamless alignment between teaching and industrial demands. The college ranks among the top in the university in terms of undergraduate furtherstudy rate and highquality graduate employment rate.

The college actively expands international cooperation.
